KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 - Malaysians need to reject certain individuals out to destroy the principles of the socio-political system practiced in this country, to ensure its future, urged International Movement of a Just World (Just) president, Dr Chandra Muzaffar, today.
"If we don't reject these individuals, who don't understand these principles, it will be very dangerous for our future generations. Therefore, we must maintain this system through the 13th General Election so that the country's safe for all time," he said.
He was delivering a talk titled "The Country's Socio-Politic Future" during the 1Malaysia gathering at the Putra World Trade Centre, here today.
Dr Chandra, who is also professor of Global Studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia, said Malaysia was much better compared to other countries which practiced such a system because to date it has managed to maintain democracy where the citizens determined their own future.
"Our foreign policies have also managed to defend Malaysia's independence and peace and prevent it from being any party's puppet. And transfer of power also occurs peacefully and methodically," he said.
He added however, that Malaysia faced challenges such as corruption, self-interest politics and racial politics, which could jeopardise the nation.
"Political discussions during public debates have also deteriorated in terms of civility. Rude and uncivilised language is frequently used and this goes against our values and the principles of 'Rukun Negara', he emphasised.
Therefore, political awareness must be raised in order to overcome this problem and leaders must also be healthy role models for the people.
